The cathedral and Hohensalzburg fortress make this market’s charming backdrop. Idling between the eighty or so stalls, breath showing as you sip from your cup of hot mulled wine or hot chocolate, you’ll be presented with an array of traditional delights to help you cross people off your Christmas list – carved wooden animals for the kids, roasted almonds for the uncles and grandfathers, knitted socks for the grandmas and traditional decorations for family abroad. Confectionary will beckon the little ones and preserved meats or sausages may get older tummies rumbling and it wouldn’t be surprising is, cuddled up to your loved one, it didn’t feel a bit romantic as well as seasonal. Beautifully lit churches in the evening, heart shaped gingerbread and strolling arm in arm…

This market springs up about five weeks before the big day, in even streets of wooden hut like stalls – its dates are quite official, it’s been around since the 15th Century, one of the first markets outside of Vienna, Paris, Amsterdam or Nuremburg – so you know you’re getting the historically correct real deal.

More Salzburg Christmas Markets

Birthplace of Mozart and deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site, Salzburg offers several famous Christmas markets to choose from. Visitors will find Advent celebrations, concerts, sleigh rides, and nativity scenes in many of the city’s historic streets, woven into the maze of market stalls. The best known of these markets takes over Cathedral and Residenz squares, filling the whole city centre with stalls and bustling holiday crowds. Austrian treats, toys, traditional performances, and loads of Christmas baubles draw people to Salzburg Christmas Market from all over the world. Other Christmas markets in the city can be found at Mirabell Square, Karajan Square, Hellbrunn Palace, and the annual Advent Market takes place at Hohensalzburg Fortress, each offering a unique and beautiful venue for enjoying the holidays.
