A medieval gem set in a modern city and surrounded by miles of fairytale Odenwald forest, Michelstadt's Old Town is one of Hesse's best-preserved and most historically evocative places, with its timber-framed houses, old city wall and Gothic church.
The Christmas market unfolds beneath rows of draped tiny, golden lights as you enter the symbolic Old Town gate, and is set on the market square, site of the famous black-and-white timber framed town hall on stilts.
Everything you'd hope for from a Christmas market is there: a carved, wooden Nativity scene, rides and toys for the children, gluhwein, crispy potato pancakes, sausages, gingerbread and cookies to snack on, and tiny, wooden chalet stalls offering carved nutcracker men, Christmas pyramids, ceramics, candles, knitwear, decorations and huge quantities of chocolates and sweets.
Make sure you explore the winding streets properly, as some of the stalls overflow into the surrounding streets and smaller 'marktplatze'.
