Late into the dark winter nights Maastricht’s residents can be found shopping for international handicrafts to put under and on their Christmas trees at the annual Winterland event – part fair, part Christmas market and the only place in town to get these kinds of festive gifts, treats and decorations.

All the fun of the fair in this case includes a big big wheel, a historic Venetian Grand carousel and a Palace of Mirrors, and a skating rink. Live music from local bands accompanies your fun and shopping, or, if you’ve had too many Dutch doughnuts, mussels, braadworsten sausage or poffertjes – tiny sweet pancakes you can eat quite a lot of at one time – to go on the rides there’s traditional performances to amuse.

Stalls

Does anyone know how to apply for a market stall at Maastrict Christmas Winterland market? I'm a trader from the U.K. currently living in Berlin. I sell high end fairtrade Nepalese handi-crafts, ritual Buddhist and Hindu items and sterling silver jewellery. I can´t find a reasonably priced pitch at any of the Berlin christmas markets (was recently quoted 1,500 euros) and thought this one might be suitable. Any pointers or advice would be appreciated! Thanks

Maastricht Christmas Winterland

The Dutch city of Maastricht sets up a Christmas Winterland wonderland each year, complete with a Ferris Wheel, a small petting zoo, a Christmas train for young children, a skating rink, and many other traditional activities, Winterland certainly caters to the youthful sprit of the holidays. Part of Winterland’s charming setup, the Christmas Market itself covers Vrijthof Square and spills out onto the edges of the square with its 80 partially covered stalls. A number of musical performances are held throughout Winterland, celebrating the history of Christmas in the ancient town. Late November until early January.
