This small market has what must be one of the world’s largest advent calendars, the Liebburg castle, which has one of its 24 windows ceremoniously opened each evening, revealing art works commissioned from local artists especially for advent.

Regional flavours, and not just in the food, permeate this traditional Christmas market. Tradition is stronger than Health and Safety regulations and there are open fires to keep everyone warm while listening to live local music and eating freshly baked biscuits or freshly roasted chestnuts.

Crib exhibitions are another very traditional feature of the season and something memorable for the Christmas market initiate, but you’ll also find the familiar, carolers, nativity players and a man dressed in red lined with white fur.
