This isn't just a good one to visit if you want to be sure of snow. Hafnarfjordur constructs a whole Christmas village to celebrate the season, with free festive entertainment and thousands of fairy lights, and it shines like a beacon in the volcanic landscape.
Visitors can buy Icelandic crafts such as traditional woollen hats and mittens, wood carvings, candles and tree decorations. Look out for rich, cream-topped hot chocolate and crisp waffles, as well as glogg – Icelandic mulled wine – the extensive consumption of which might explain the locals' acceptance of the idea of there being thirteen Santa Clauses present. As well as these Yule Lads (who, legend has it, put gifts in children's shoes during the thirteen nights leading up to Christmas Day), you might also bump into their mother, Gryla the ogre, who comes along to keep an eye on them... and you!
