A covered market makes more sense at this time of year and in Graz a pavilion is put up over the main square to allow for comfortable market shopping or strolling whatever the weather. Performers keep market visitors entertained in weather fair or foul with music and dance and Graz is always coming up with new ways to keep people cheerful at this time of year – be it a giant nativity scene carved out of ice or a giant advent calendar projected onto the side of one of the town’s most attractive buildings.
The local festive tipple is Feuerzangenbowle – basically a blend of wine and rum set on fire – mmmm, so no worries about keeping warm then.

Are there any cheap hostels to stay in near the markets, prices around 10 Euros????
We will be in Graz the 2nd week of December, Monday-Thursday and wanted to make sure that the markets would be open, not just on the weekends.
There isn’t just one Christmas market in Graz, Austria – there are six! Hauptplatz, Eisernen, Tummelplatz, Franciscan Quarter, Glockenspiel Platz, and Färberplatz are nestled throughout this striking town, each paying tribute to Christmas in its own festive way. Hauptplatz, the town centre and home of the famous town hall, used to be the designated spot for public executions, but now hosts outdoor Christmas performances. Graz is internationally known for its Glockenspiels, and the Glockenspiel Platz is a market where the music of the country’s favourite instrument will always be heard. All of the markets feature an enticing variety of pottery, metalwork, and other artistic Christmas creations. You can get to the markets throughout this World Heritage site by way of the Advent train which departs from the site of the 13th century Franciscan Church.
