By its very nature, a Christmas market generates a sense of nostalgia. Simple pleasures – a hot drink on a cold night, woolly mittens, traditional snacks, a glimpse of the red-and-white-suited man himself... So the aim of Caerphilly's Christmas market organisers – to make their town's effort a step back in time for visitors – is a little romantic indulgence more enjoyable now than it could be at any other time of year.
The market takes place within the walls of the imposing Medieval castle – the largest of its period in Britain – so you have to cross the moat and make your way to the inner ward, where the themed market craft and food stalls huddle, protected from the wind by the huge castle walls.
There's also a jester, medieval musicians and carol singers – but if it all gets a little too much and you start to crave modernity, you can head back down the hill into the town centre for fairground rides, children's workshops, cookery demonstrations, 21st century gifts and Santa's grotto.
