The Christmas markets in Budapest have got a uniquely Hungarian flavour, and it’s not just the goulash, it’s also the Hungarian folk dances and music and the glassware. The main Budapest market is held in Vorosmarty Square, one of the city’s most beautiful, quite close to the Gerbeaud Confectionary company building which is transformed into a giant advent calendar, a window a day opened at 5PM each day until Christmas.

The market itself is the usual quickly constructed village of wooden cottages filled with festive treats and gifts, the Christmas cookies are pretty famous, but in this case all the products you buy are guaranteed to have been handmade in the traditional way by the Association of Hungarian Folk Artists.

Budapest Christmas Market

Budapest's Vorosmarty Square hosts the annual Budapest Christmas Market. The market features artists and wood craftsmen at its over 100 stalls. The smells of chestnuts and mulled wine penetrate the air as the square is stuffed with food stalls. This market is extremely child friendly, with many options for entertaining kids, from the puppet theater to being able to design their own decorations. There's also fun for grown-ups as a number of folk bands and dance groups perform throughout the market. This christmas market is continually ranked as one of the best in Europe.
