Commissioned by Prince Francois-Eugene of Savoy and built during the first half of the 18th century to a lavish baroque design, the two-part Belvedere Palace is one of Vienna’s outstanding beauty spots.
Set in an immaculately kept French formal garden, it now serves as a wonderful art museum for most of the year. At Christmas, though, the courtyard becomes the opulent setting for a festive market of around forty decorated stands, which sell traditional handicrafts, decorations, souvenirs and toys. Austrian pastries and mulled wine are of course also on offer, and there’s a carousel, a choir and a brass band.
Combined with a browse around the world’s largest collection of Gustav Klimt’s paintings, a visit to this Christmas market promises to be a sumptuous, romantic day well spent.
