The horns of heralding angles are replaced by hunting horns in Baden-Baden’s Christmas Market nativity, but the animals baying in the manger are real and pet-able. As well as the baby Jesus, Santa makes an appearance, in a horse rather then reindeer drawn sleigh or cart, the hunting horns and a children’s choir heralding his arrival. Orchestras, bands and more choirs perform in front of the Kurhaus – the town hall – which gets its colonnades done up in lights which spread out from it lighting up the prettiest parts of the town.

They don’t get any snow here – the famous thermal ground puts a stop to any thoughts of a white Christmas, but it’s still plenty cold enough to enjoy a dram of gluhwine and huddle close to your sweetheart for warmth as you stroll amongst the stalls selling all the things Christmas markets are known for – wood carved gifts are a local favourite.

Magical place

It is the first time we have experienced a european christmas market and it certainly wont be the last, it was a wonderful place, friendly people and combined with the therme baths, this was one of the best holidays we have had as a family. We will be booking up again, this time for longer, the black forest is also a must see, we hopped on a bus from the centre and about 50mins later we were up to our thighs in clear crisp snow, the bus had a 20min break and we got the same service back, it cost around 5euro in total for three of us.

The markets were magical, the smell of cinnamon and mulled wine was fantastic, and one of the stall does a lovely honey liquer, that warms you. I cant wait to book up again, brilliant!!!!

Baden-Baden Christmas Market

Baden-Baden is one of Germany's most picturesque cities. During the Christmas market season the already beautiful scenery is lit up by thousands of Christmas light decorations. A nativity scene with live animals is at the center of this small but bustling market. Over 50 beautifully decorated stalls and a range of open air and church choirs make this a real jewel of a market.
