Adults nostalgic for the Christmases of their childhoods will appreciate the puppet show this market puts on as much as ‘kids today’. The roundabout and old fashioned, and rather basic rides they may even appreciate more – though they’ll be too big to have a go. Set in Cologne’s Altstadt – Old Town – this market’s timbered stalls aren’t the same ones first used for this market – but then neither are the puppet show actors, though some of the puppets are – but they certainly look the part.

Visitors on the tour-de-Christmas-market come by earlier and there are more local families in the evenings for the children’s choirs and the best of the puppet shows.

Alter Markt isn’t as large as Cologne’s Cathedral Christmas Market, but it still has a range of gifts and Christmassy snacks to satisfy people who’ve come down for the atmosphere as well as those who’ve come for the Christmas shopping.

During the run up to Christmas, Cologne is one of Germany's most popular destinations. Annually, the city's 6 markets boast over 1 million visitors. The city is fully decorated for the occasion. The top market in Cologne is the Cathedral Market with the largest Christmas tree in Germany right next to the magnificent Gothic Dom. The Neumarkt market is Germany's oldest, just a few hundred yards away - both are in the center of the shopping district. The most child-oriented market is the Alter Markt Christmas market. Kids can enjoy a puppet theater, a children's roundabout and a multitude of toy shops. These three are the most well known, but are only half of the Christmas markets you can find in Cologne.
