Located in Mexico's Sierra Madre Orientale, the Sotano de las Golondrinas ("Well of the Swallows") is the world's most spectacular pit cave, with the shortest route to the bottom being a 333 meter free drop. The giant pit bells out dramatically towards the bottom. Only the most experienced vertical cavers should attempt the long rappel into the depths of Golondrinas, but any visitor can peer over the edge of this astonishing hole and may even see all the way to the bottom when the sun is high overhead. Base jumpers occasionally take the fastest route to the bottom but like cavers they still have to climb the long, long rope using ropewalkers to get back out. Every morning, thousands of nesting cave swallows and parrots spiral up and out of the great pit, to return noisily in the evening.
