This huge limestone cave system formed by the river Reka is connected by natural rock bridges along the river’s underground route which takes it more than 40km below the surface. Only a small part of the complex has been mapped, including several show caves, but as the river flows deeper and funnel like passages lead further underground delving underneath the ocean, the tunnels fill with water and begin to form on multiple levels so are difficult to negotiate.
Reka and Timavo are the main show caves and are well developed with a cable car put in to take visitors from the rim to one of the largest natural bridges.
A 4.5 km path has been signposted which descends 130m past the huge cavernous show caves and begins down into the river funnel.
