The magnificent show cave of Postonja is Europe's answer to America's Carlsbad Caverns. The first part of the tour consists of a wild train ride in which you are hurtled at high speeds through several kilometers of cave passage. Formations rush past in a blur, sometimes almost too close for comfort. This first part of Postonja was blackened in 1942 when some brave local cavers sneaked in through another entrance and set fire to munitions which the Nazi invaders had stored in the cave. The deeper parts of the cave were unaffected and are very beautiful, much like Carlsbad Caverns but wetter, with huge stalagmites and just about every other type of sparkling calcite formation in spectacular abundance. Wild cave tours are available in the area, including the stunningly beautiful Krizna cave which is navigated by paddling a rubber raft along an underground river.

In 1989 while in the Navy my ship docked in Trieste, Italy and we took a tour into what was then Yugoslavia and visited a large cave with a blackened entrance.
I remember it was an awesome sight- a really beautiful natural wonder.
Also, the local wine was excellent.
