Minas Gerais is an area known for its many caverns including the Lapinha, Maquiné, and Rei do Mato Grottos. These are all caverns designed for tourist visits and provide controlled visitation of the Peraucu River Valley. The Lapinha grotto has an astounding 16 chambers from which prehistoric bones have been unearthed. Lagoa Santa Man’s skull was found here, as were saber-toothed tiger fossils. The Maquine grotto is known for its seven chambers dripping with stalagmites and stalactites. The Rei do Mato grotto also has many stalactites and stalagmites. This grotto is safe for visitors with modern lighting and walkways.
