The charming, elegant town of Positano has lots of stories to tell of writers and movie stars, but its ancient Grotta la Porta cave, located just inside the harbour, tells one that could only have been revealed by archaeologists. Many centuries ago – during the Paleolothic era – the people who lived here traded in shellfish, and in fact seem to have based their whole local economy on mollusc fishing, to judge by the quantity of shells excavated here. Carved stones and other evidence of prehistoric humans was also found here, in what would once have been a huge cave, though parts of it have collapsed after years of erosion.
