Ape Cave in Washington was formed by the only known basaltic eruption of Mt. St. Helen’s. The cave was discovered in 1947 but wasn’t explored until a scout troop entered the cave in the 1950s. Ape Cave is divided into two sections: the upper cave and the lower cave. The lower cave is an easier trek which takes about one hour to complete. The more strenuous upper cave consists of climbing over 27 boulder piles and lasts around 2.5 hours. Ape Cave is known for its 13,042 ft (3,976m) lava tube which was created by lava flowing through a certain area for an extended period of time. This lava tube is the third largest in North America.
