This cathedral is in one of the most beautiful medieval towns in the Mediterranean, and though it was damaged in an earthquake in the mid 17th century and was never fully repaired to its medieval state – most noticeably it has two very different towers – it's still regarded as one of the loveliest and most splendid Romanesque buildings on the Adriatic. Much of the splendour comes from within, more precisely from the artefacts within: frescos from the 14th century, reliefs of the saints in gold and silver, and precious personal objects once belonging to the saints.
The first church on this site was built in the early 9th century, but the earthquake surviving sections of the current cathedral were consecrated in 1166.
