Saint Finbarre's Cathedral

Saint Finbarre's three pale spires are one of Cork's landmarks, you can see them from all over town.

Saint Finbarre is Cork's patron saint – he was the Bishop of Cork in the 6th Century and pretty much founded the city.

There's been a church on this spot since medieval times, but the current, Gothic Revival style building was finished in 1879 – though it was consecrated and in use before that. When it was finished, the architect, William Bruges gave the cathedral a statue of a golden angel playing a wind instrument which sits on the roof of the sanctuary. One of the superstitions relating to the church is that if the angel ever falls off the end of the world is nigh...
