This cathedral is one of the oldest outside of Europe – construction of the mission which would become the cathedral began in 1521, but the current, post multiple hurricane version, dates from the end of the 16th Century. The simplicity of the Gothic-esque design couldn’t be less like the ornate cathedrals of Europe, but that’s the very reason why this cathedral is so remarkable and what many people would call elegant.

As well as the architecture and religious artefacts, and of course to pray, people visit this cathedral to pay homage to the founder of San Juan, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon, whose tomb is within the cathedral walls. The cathedral also contains the max-covered mummy of St. Pio, a Roman martyr and a wooden Mary with four swords impaling her bosom.
