This fragmentary ruin is delightfully placed beside Loch Ness and is the castle depicted on the monster postcards and cartoons. The upper court forming a keep on the highest part of the site is 13th century and parts of the apartments and the base of the square tower at the far end are 14th century, but most of the walls of the large lower court and the twin-towered gatehouse date from the 16th century. There is access to the top of the square tower. Up by the main road high above the castle is a large new visitor centre.
