A very impressive curtain wall 3.6m thick and 15m high with a tall round tower at each end and a gatehouse in the middle closes off a court of c1370 on a sheer-sided coastal promontory from which the Bass Rock (another fortress) is clearly visible. A hall block with vaulted cellars remains at the north end and there are various later outworks. Tantallon belonged the Red Douglases, Earls of Angus and required much repair work after a 20 day battering by James V’s cannon in 1528.
