This was King Ludwig‘s, builder of the most fairy tale of fantasy castles, childhood home, the summer house and hunting lodge of his father King Maximillian II. Built on top of a ruined 12th Century knight’s fortress the current castle was completed in 1837 and is neogothic in architectural style. Open to the public but still technically a residence of the Bavarian royal linage.
