The still-roofed lofty square tower keep and the walls of the inner ward are 12th century. Within the walls are a ruined but otherwise mostly complete set of domestic apartments of the 12th and 14th centuries. The walls of the 180m square outer ward are Roman work of c285-90. Standing to full height, with fourteen of the original twenty U-shaped bastions still surviving, the outer defences of this fort are more complete than any other Roman fort in Britain. There are no Roman internal buildings, so the overall layout is not as complete as in forts on Hadrian¹s Wall such as Housesteads and Birdoswald, but there is in one corner a 12th century priory church.
