Phra Nakhon Khiri, or commonly known as Khao Wang, means the celestial city on the mountain. This magnificent site built in the reign of King Rama IV (King MongKut) ascended the throne in 1851, and then 7 years later in 1858 he began the project of the constructing the palace complex with the royal chapel on the mountain. Now the palaces become the most important tourist attraction of the province.

After the renovation of the thunder bolt sticken building in 1883, it seems that Phar Nakhon Khiri had been left without any effort of the conservation until 1953 when the present king had the Fine Arts Department renovate the palace complex. The Department registered the place as an important monumental site of the nation names Phra NaKhon Khiri historical park and Phra Nakhon Khiri National Museum on August 27, 1979. Ancient art objects once decorated various buildings at Phra Nakhon Khiri are now conserves in the Phra Nakhon Khiri National Museum which occupies 2 building of Phra Thinang Phetphum Phairot and Phra Thinang Pramot Mahaisawan.
