One of Europe’s best preserved renaissance ‘Water Castles’, Egeskov Castle or Slot was built on Funen island surrounded on a lake which mirrors the graceful red brick, towered, fortified manor houses. Built to be defendable in a siege situation the castle is in two parts split by a wall a metre thick, the idea being forces could surrender half and keep fighting for the rest. Secret staircases link the two portions, also defended by towers and many narrow artillery ports. As well as the high tech defences, the castle also has some of Europe’s first indoor plumbing. The castle’s interior is only partly furnished, oil paintings making up a large part of the contents. The lake is surrounded by a romantic park and gardens complete with water features, topiary, a fuchsia garden, a vegetable garden a maze and other attractions have been built on its grounds including a vintage museum presenting a large collection of cars and planes. Originally completed in 1554, the castle has been owned by the same family since 1784.

Of all of Europe’s moat castles, Egeskov Castle is the best preserved. Nearly half a millennium in age, it has been in the Bille family since 1784. After years of being a defensive structure, the beautiful castle is now home to a number of museums, including the Veteran Car Museum, Motorcycle Museum, and Museum of Horse-Drawn Vehicles. One of the world’s most famous dollhouses, Titania’s Palace, can also be found in the castle. Sir Neville Wilkinson took 15 years to complete the incredibly intricate structure for his lucky daughter who sought a home for the fairies in her garden.
