Private residence of the Swedish royal family, Drottiningholm Palace was built in the late 16th Century on the island of Lovon as a royal summer palace. Set on grounds generous enough for the country’s rulers, it should have guaranteed some privacy, but it has since become a popular tourist attraction as well as their home - the parks and gardens which make up the huge grounds lead in part to its popularity. The original castle circa 1580 burnt to the ground and construction on its replacement took 80 years to get going, the product is in the French style along the lines of Versailles. A second fire destroyed the palace theatre in 1762 but it was replaced more quickly with a more sophisticated French design at the same time as much of the interiors were re-done. This period theatre has become one of castle’s most famous features and galas and performances are held there regularly. The oldest gardens are in a baroque style and were built in the late 17th Century but there are also statue gardens, ornamental gardens, tree lined walks and parkland. The Chinese Pavilion is a highlight for garden visitors.
