Although extremely ruinous as a result of being blown up by Parliamentary troops following a long siege in the 1640s, this royal castle is still very impressive and has a fine location on an isolated hill on the Isle of Purbeck. Fragments of a lofty early tower keep and apartments lie within an inner ward walled in stone by 1100. The 13th century outer courts have numerous flanking towers, mostly D-shaped, although one is octagonal, and there are traces of an early outer hall and remains of two twin-towered gatehouses.
