This seat of the Carew family has a hall-block of c1300-25 on the west side with impressive round towers rising from square bases with pyramidal spurs. The east range of c1275-90 incorporates a 12th century gatehouse and has a chapel in a tower projecting from it, whilst the north range facing the estuary was built in the 1580s by Sir John Perrot. Beyond an outer east gate and curtain are traces of a Civil War period ravelin. The south curtain wall was mostly destroyed during or after a siege in 1645 by Parliamentary troops.
