This iconic, headline grabbing palace has housed England’s turbulent royal histories since 1837. The gates guarding the majestic site are weathered with times of joy and crisis felt both inside and out. Originally built for the Duke of Buckingham, the interior of the state rooms is a riot of Fabergé opulence and colour. The palace regularly welcomes a select few to banquets and receptions as well state occasions. Daily during the summer months and every other day in winter, witness the famous Changing of the Guard in the Forecourt and beware of the clamour of tourist cameras. Visit the Queen’s Gallery near the Royal Mews to see parts of England’s collective history. The gilded railings and gates become a backdrop each year for the London Marathon but keep their 42 acres of garden hidden from the runners. Visit when the Royal Standard is flying and imagine Her Majesty at home as you peer in from outside…most probably in the rain.
