A fine quadrangular castle with circular corner towers and square intermediate towers built in the 1380s by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, supposedly against French raiders, but actually something of a sham fortress since there are actually very few useful loops for discharging weapons and the moat that makes the ruin so delightful could have been quite quickly drained by breaching its dam.  Only fragments remain of the inner walls of the internal buildings but the disposition of the rooms is quite clear.

A great example.

A very impressive and complete castle. Its funny how it looks so impressive but was actually of little defensive use. Gets busy in the summer and queues can develop going up the towers (not to mention the tacky costume shows), so go later in the year. Its very impressive on a misty autumn morning...
