This is a fine example of a concentric castle within a wet moat filled from the sea, which also gave access to a dock for ships. Begun in 1295, it has an inner ward with two huge gatehouses and six round towers, one of which contains a remarkable vaulted chapel. Surrounding it is a lower outer wall on an octagonal plan with two gatehouse (one left incomplete), and many small circular towers. There is access to most of the wall summits. Little remains of the internal domestic buildings and nothing at all of the town walls.
