This was the last of the stone castle strongholds built by the 15th Century Livonian Order of Knights and was completed in 1456. Destroyed in 1706 it has been reconstructed and now houses a museum. 12kms away, Rundale Palace is much higher up the list of archaeological attractions; built in the 18th Century and designed by the Italian architect also responsible for Russia’s Hermitage, this is Latvia’s baroque and rococo masterpiece: opulent and intricate, damaged by fighting the palace has been restored and converted into a museum. It will be the 400th anniversary of Bauska town’s founding in 2009.
