It would seem the translation is ‘Granny Vida’, and this medieval fortress castle has definitely been around long enough to be a Nanna, it was built on the in the 10th Century to replace a Roman Watchtower. Baba Vida’s many towers and complete main walls make this the best preserved medieval castle in Bulgaria, which is surprising considering it was one of the country’s most important military installations in the middle ages and once withstood an eight month siege against Byzantine would-be intruders. Later it became a weapons factory which stood the castle fort in good stead for its current role as museum.
Fixed up in the 20th Century, Baba Vida is nearly a perfect square and has a six metre deep moat around it. It has two walls, the inner wall has nine towers and an outer wall with just two, but much thicker and on these cannons were arranged. The residential part of the castle is arranged around an inner courtyard.
