Arundel is similar to Windsor in having a 12th century shell keep on a high mound between two large courts, the lower of which contains a very fine set of apartments, although only the undercrofts not seen by visitors are medieval. The keep has been little altered other than adding towers to contain the well and gateway and renewal of the battlements, which are accessible to visitors. A Norman gatehouse with a later barbican also survives, and several somewhat altered medieval towers remain on the wall of the upper ward.
