Perched on a mountain ridge 630 metres above sea level, this castle has a panoramic, and rather stunning, view over the Karpass Peninsular and the sea beyond it; which is why it was built as a defensive lookout here by the Byzantines in the 10th Century to repel the raiding Arabs.

The castle is most historically famous for being where the Byzantine ruler of the island holed up as Richard the Lionheart took Cyprus, and the castle was so damaged in this encounter that it had to have most of its defensive wall rebuilt and was afterwards used mostly as a 13th Century hunting lodge.

These days you enter from the east below two thick towers which inside hold vaults, chambers and cisterns. This is the most easily reached of the three defensive castles built onto this ridge and also has some of the best views – in winter it’s sometimes possible to see the snow topped mountains of Lebanon across the waters.
