A military stronghold as well as a source of architectural pride, this castle fort on the hill has spectacular views over Barcelona. Built in the 17th and 18th centuries to defend the city and keep the local Catalans in line, in the twentieth century the castle was used by Franco as a prison for political prisoners and then as a military museum.

As well as highlighting the forts military history, the castle is also home to the couldn’t-be-more-opposite Museum of Comics and Illustration. You don’t have to pay to go inside the castle but you do have to pay for the comic museum.

If you don’t fancy trekking up the 173 metre hill you can ride up in cable car style enjoying the view of the port and the ocean. It’s also the only place in town where you can see a statue of Franco.

The views from the Montjuic Funicular cable car and also from the Montjuic castle are grand. It would be a shame to visit Barcelona and miss this ride.

The Montjuic Teleféric

The Teleféric de Montjuic is a cable car that runs from the Montjuic Funicular station to the Castell de Montjuic. It’s smoother, more modern and generally less terrifying than the over-crowded Barceloneta-Montjuic version. The cars are more frequent, the queues move faster, and the views are just as spectacular.
