Often referred to as Europe's Grand canyon, the Grand Canyon of the Verdon or Verdon Gorge splices the French regions of Var and Alpes de Hautes Provence. Famous for the turquoise waters of the Verdon River, the gorge is in places edged by thin, pale, limestone cliffs and in others wooded, 45 degree angled slopes, creating a varied and interesting environment.

One of the most interesting sections of the gorge is the Styx du Verdon, a maze of tall, winding, crenulated cliffs which eventually lead the river underground.

The gorge ends at an artificial lake. Kayaking, rafting, paragliding, water skiing, climbing, fishing, hiking and mountain biking happen on the river and surrounds. There are several well known, well marked walking tracks to help visitors explore.
