This area is also called the ‘Red Valley’, but there are other colours also at play here – white, purple and green. The green of the grass which gets more vibrant the closer you get to the water of the settlements, the purple of the mountains in the distance with the white snows icing their peaks, and the red of the soil and the rocks and the bricks and everything else that’s made from them.
The gorge itself has steep narrow sections before opening out into the valley, and most people experience at least some of the gorge from within a four wheel drive driving along the base of the gorge in and out of the river which has carved the furrow.
The way that the volcanic rocks have eroded creates a huge variety of interesting perspectives, enough to satisfy even the greediest photographers.
As well as being an area of great beauty, this was also an important region for the Berber people from a military perspective, and they built several kasbahs close to the gorge to add to the natural fortification the gorge provides.
