Hovsgol Lake is a huge glassy mountain lake surrounded by Mongolian countryside that can best be described as magical. Toilogt Ger Camp is situated on the north-west side of the lake and is made up of twenty Gers, also know as Yurts (circular lattice frames covered in layers of felt and canvas) which have been the traditional homes of Mongolian nomads for centuries. Inside the Gers, a central wood-burning stove keeps it warm. The camp is owned and run by Mongolians, who are focused on being as eco-friendly as possible making Toilogt the first camp in Mongolia to use solar energy. The lake provides plenty of water activities, the general location offers hiking and horse riding trails in a land famed for having no fences. Elk, red wolves and reindeer roam freely in the surroundings. For those lucky enough to party with the locals, traditional Mongolian “throat singing” simply must be heard to be believed. Closed between October and April due to fairly freezing conditions.
