I have always loved the thought of "the age of exploration" and being an "intrepid traveller" and the idea of setting off on a "grand adventure" filled with romance, mystery and excitement. A bygone era!

I recently went to Thanda Private Game Reserve, located in the heart of Zululand in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa and had that kind of experience! Thanda, meaning ‘love’ in Zulu, is everything I could have wished for! We stayed in their non-electrified tented camp and felt as though we had stepped back in time on a colonial expedition…..

Romantic accommodation in the form of ultra luxury tents - think of 5 star accommodation at a top hotel and put it in a tent. Deluxe ensuite bathroom, huge double bed, large, almost walk in cupboards, decanter of sherry in the rooms, little lounge area and your own private decked area for watching the game wander by. With only 4 tents in the camp exclusivity and an authentic safari experience are guaranteed. At night the camp and the tents are lit with oil lamps which really take your breath away when you return to camp from your evening game drive.

The reserve is home to the Big Five - Lions, Leopards, Elephants, Buffalo and Rhino. Over 3 nights we were able to see all of the Big Five in incredible up close sightings!  Our ranger sharing his infinite bush knowledge with us made the sightings all that more special, and allowed us to learn so much about the wildlife and surrounding nature.

Will we go back….. Absolutely!
