Pansea Ksar Ghilane consists of 60 large canvas tents, each decked out with 5 star luxury. Located deep in the Sahara desert on a stretch of date-palmed oasis, the tents are built on the site of an old ksar, or Berber castle. Although Pansea Ksar Ghilane is referred to as a camp, it’s much more of an exclusive resort posing as a camp, although being pampered in the harsh desert landscape is more than welcome! The best features of the camp are the boutiques selling local crafts and impressive swimming pool, fed by a natural spring. The tents are decked out with wrought iron furniture, glass topped tables, en suite bathrooms and much appreciated air-conditioning.

The surrounding area is both overwhelmingly arid and fascinating, with an ancient Roman fort 3km northwest of the camp and a bit further are the huge dunes of the Great Eastern Erg. A day trip by 4x4 can take you to visit the interesting villages between the desert and the coast, or even to old movie locations, like the salt pans of Chott el Jerid where some scenes from The English Patient were filmed, or the ancient pod-like granaries near Tataouine, where the early Star Wars movies were shot. Back at the camp, camel rides are almost essential, as is some pampering in the thermal spring. Sunsets are spectacular multi-coloured affairs, which seem to last for ages. If you are up for the strenuous 4 hour drive from the nearest town of Djerba, this remote haven presents a unique experience. Open all year long.
