Built on the grounds of an abandoned forge from the 1930‘s, this site has some awesome scenery and a great setting: a 260 hectare farm in the East Pyrenean mountains.
Between July and August, La Fargassa offers campers six fully equipped Dutch-style “de Waard” tents, which each sleep 4-5. There are also chalets and apartments. Before July, and again after August, campers are welcome to bring their own camping equipment and tents. The land is run as a productive organic farm, with an onsite shop selling fresh organic produce such as jams, fruit, veg and bread. The farm also has donkeys and horses, which are available for a light horse-riding session.
The campsite is right next to a river with waterfalls and rocky pools great for a cooling dip in the summer. A coast to coast footpath crosses the land, which provides a scenic walk through the countryside passing quaint villages.
Aside from just rambling around the campsite and farm, there is loads to do and see in the area. There is the beach: a 50 minute drive away, or the sacred three-peaked Mount Canigou, surrounded by an area rich in Catalan history with numerous festivals held throughout the year. The town nearest to the campsite is Amelie-les-Bains, along the Tech valley, overlooking Mount Canigou. The town is picturesque, with red-roofed, white-walled buildings and some great restaurants and little shops, selling authentic Catalan crafts and produce. The town also has numerous sulphur springs and two baths, one the preserved remains of an ancient Roman baths.
If you fancy a change of scenery for a day, the Spanish border is a mere 3 kilometres away- easy to pop over for a paella lunch. Blessed with Mediterranean weather, the winters are mild with the peak seasons and best time to visit being between July and August.
