Angel Island has a history of different settlers; originally it was used as a hunting ground for the Miwok Indians who up until the colonization of America, would take to the island in boats for the deer and the seals that loved the rocks. Since then it has had various military roles, as well as being used as a quarantine and immigration station. Now though the island has little practical value, but does have some great camp sites. Views across to the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco’s Marin District give campers a feeling of separation from the plugged-in world, without venturing into the wilderness.
