The Giant Buddha Temple in Zhangye has two claims to fame. It houses the world's largest reclining clay Buddha and it is, according to local legend, the birthplace of Kublai Khan.

The Buddhist Classics Hall is said to contain some 6000 complete texts. Some of these are even written in gold making them both sacred and precious.

Zhangye is often missed out of Silk Road itineraries. This site makes a stop worthwhile as the whole complex is both peaceful and interesting. Much of the artwork is unique and, of course, the Giant Buddha is simple magnificent.

Stop by, and also enjoy a sleepy town for its lack of tourists.

Is Kublai Kahn real? I thought he was just in the poem :)
