This garden started out growing plants for medicinal purposes but has added thousands and thousands of plants to its collection and now has something like 34,000 varieties displayed inside glasshouses and out. The Scottish Heath Garden and Peat Garden give an idea of the local landscape (sans city) but there is also an Alpine region and a Chinese Hillside – the garden is home to the largest collection of Chinese plants outside of China. At 165 metres long the garden has an impressive herbaceous border, which is outdone in impressive size by a cluster of HUGE Sierra redwoods.
Entry to the gardens is free but you have to pay to go inside some of the glasshouses including the Victorian Temperate Palm House, the tallest of its kind in the UK and home to something else that will impress – about one percent of all known flowering plants.
