One of the highlights of this garden is a huge Magnolia which was transplanted here in 1807, after 16 years of growth – now it's huge and ancient, but still very beautiful. This impressive age proves how old the whole garden is. Opened to the public in 1829, the collection of plants had been around for about a hundred years before that, first as a medical garden, then as a formal botanical collection.
The garden got its 'terribly British' style in the 1820s and 30s which is why it looks something like an English park with rose gardens and camellias.
The greenhouses sprung up from 1845, and the fountains, orangery, ornamental ponds and faux mountain were added after that. These days the botanical collection includes around 11,000 species.
It's free to stroll the gardens but they charge if you want to take a peek inside the greenhouses.
