The Ranch at Live Oak Malibu is a holistically minded, luxury wellness vacation/fitness bootcamp located north of Los Angeles in the Santa Monica Mountains. The trip is all inclusive, so the room, food, and activities are included with cost. They offer both a 1 week program in Malibu, and a 4-day extended weekend program in Westlake Village (at the 4 Seasons). Due it's hotel setting, the 4-day program is probably the more "luxurious" of the two.

Both retreats are certainly for those who want a more meaningful vacation experience and for those who want to push themselves physically and mentally. The program focuses on about 8-10 miles of daily hiking on various trails in the hills of Malibu, as well as yoga, swimming, TRX fitness, and core fitness, in addition to other activities. The program, designed to "keep you up and moving" with low-impact, moderate exercise for most of the day, but they also allow for lots of time for rest and relaxation. Guests receive an hour long private massage Monday-Friday (this is included with the cost of the trip).

Unlike a lot of bootcamps, this trip is designed to help you let go of the "reigns" without the feeling that you're being forced into unrelenting workouts. It's a stress-free way to get you feeling better, mind, body and soul. You won't be forced to do anything that you don't feel you are able to do; they will happily accommodate a range of fitness levels. Our group had 14, and we were almost at full capacity. You get plenty of one-on-one attention.

The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive and the property is gorgeous and beautifully landscaped - it's actually located on a historic ranch that once served as the set for Hopalong Cassidy. Rooms are private and simple, but very comfortable.

The food is organic and vegetarian, with a focus on an anti-inflammatory, low-fat diet. Meals are chef prepared, and mostly consist of vegetables, nuts, fruits, and minimal (gluten-free) grains - you'd be amazed what kinds of creative tasty things can be made with the healthy stuff. The folks at The Ranch also focus on the "local" aspect of healthy eating. A good portion of the produce comes from their own garden on the property, which guests have an opportunity to tour during their stay. They also send you home with a some recipes.

Most guests lose weight (or inches) while on the trip, and many will continue to lose weight after the trip due to an increased metabolism. Guests are also cut off from phone and Internet, which makes it easier to focus on your health for a week. I lost 4 pounds and 11 inches during my stay, and I'm doing much better with exercise and eating healthy today. I'm so grateful that I got to go on this trip - I came out the other side bright eyed, with a renewed vigor for life. It sounds cheesy, but it's true!
