Río Lagartos

This is also the name of the nearby fishing village, but there's not much reason to visit the town, unless you're on the way to or from the nearby lake, which is one of the best places in Mexico to see flamingos. There are supposed to be about 8,000 flamingos living on this mangrove surrounded lake, now a protected reserve. Hundreds of other birds also benefit from this protection, including white ibis, cormorants, gigantic white pelicans, snowy and red egrets and tiger herons. The best way to see them is to get in amongst them on a boat, and there are plenty of people willing to take you out.

Come early so that you can drive back to your base – there's not much in the way of accommodation here, and nothing in the way of a bank or ATM.
