Birds of Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands

Listed under Birdwatching in Cairns, Australia.

Good choice of accommodations, from luxurious spa-style to clean backpacker or family run guest-houses, a variety of habitats such as mangroves, eucalyptus savannas and rain forest within a short distance, twelve species of locally endemic birds and amazing unique mammals like tree-kangaroos, platypus and possums.

Here there are good spots to see the huge and endangered Southern Cassowary, the colourful and quite noisy Victoria's Riflebird, one of the most southerly of the birds of paradise, the strange stick bowers of the Great and Golden Bowerbirds and the diminutive red, blue and green Double-eyed Fig-parrot. Add to this Cairns Esplanade, one of the world's best places to see the migratory shorebirds from China and Siberia, and the unmissable spectacle of the Great Barrier Reef offshore with its accessible seabird colonies of Sooty Terns and Brown Noddies, and you have the splendid birding destination of far North Queensland. The dry country of the outback is also within easy visiting range and trip over to Georgetown in the west takes about 4 hours on reasonable roads, getting you into arid savanna country and giving a taste of the great dry immensity that is the inland of the continent.
